Facilities

Protein Expression, Purification and Kinetics: The SBCG group has all the necessary facilities for cloning, expression and purification of protein targets: PCR thermocyclers, bacteria culture incubators, cold room, large refrigerating unit equipped with an integrated system  for carrying out liquid column chromatography (AKTA purifier UPC10), solely dedicated to protein purification and standard laboratory equipment (water distillers, refrigerated (Centurion K280R) and non-refrigerated bench-top microcentrifuges, high speed refrigerated floor centrifuges, SDS-PAGE protein and agarose gel electrophoresis equipment, UV transilluminators, documentation system, high voltage and regular power packs, water baths, pH meters, UV/VIS spectrophotometer Varian/Carry 100 conc equipped with peltier temperature controller, fluorophotometer, several fridge and freezer units (+4 to -80 °C), analytical balances, and other standard laboratory equipments).

Crystallization: A constant-temperature (20 °C) room, 2nd generation crystallization robot (Oryxnano, Douglas Instruments Ltd), a number of bench top controlled temperature incubators (10, 14, 16 and 20 °C), for protein crystallisations, a stereo-microscope Leica MZ16 equipped with a digital camera CDFC320 and other stereoscopes.

X-ray data collection: Access to the European Synchrotron Radiation Sources for X-ray crystallographic data collection such as EMBL-DESY, Hamburg, Germany, SRS, Daresbury, UK, ESRF Grenoble, France, Max-Lab, Lund. Sweden, and ELETTRA, Trieste, Italy is granted to SBCG through applications)

Computation: 2 Silicon Graphics O2 (R10000 and R12000), 1 Silicon Graphics Indy (R4600) workstations, 1 Hewlett Packard Visualise B2000, and 2 Fujitsu-Siemens Celsius Xeon Dual-Core Workstations,  used mainly for as graphics workstations, 1 Linux cluster based on eight AMD ATHLON processors and several linux workstations all equipped with X-ray data processing and structural and molecular analysis programs, etc. Besides work stations for centralised data processing the host institute has modern personal computer facilities, comprising a PC-based network with high-speed intranet and internet access and featuring graphics-processing software, scanners and laser colour printers.
